SPRING CLEANING IN AUGUST

Our work load has kept us from dealing with an issue that we had been aware of but never had the time to address: our office was starting to look like a dorm room. Last month we finally had the opportunity to initiate a major cleaning and reorganization. After sorting through our project folders, reorganizing the library and clearing out the finishing room, we finally went through the numerous boxes of our printed samples that we have collected over the past 19 years.

We had held on to a sample of nearly every project that I had worked on, all the way back to my days as an Art Director at Warner Bros. Records. While going through this work I experienced a number of emotions. First of all, it made me very much aware of how many years have flown by since I started my career and, sadly, how much the music industry has changed during that time. I am happy to realize that, for the most part, I have very fond memories of working on all of those packages. I also remember all of the fun and crazy - some truly crazy - people that I worked with.

The office is once again clean and presentable and we're ready to get back to work.

A couple of weeks ago, we spent the morning with Jason Ware at his studio shooting some new set-ups for our website. The first shot will be used in a splash introduction announcing the celebration of Orabor's 10th Anniversary. The second set-up is a product shot of a CD package for The Miracles that we recently completed for Motown Records/Universal Music Enterprises.

Jason Ware is an extremely talented still life and product photographer with whom we have collaborated over the past ten years. He has a wonderful eye for composition, color and detail. He also makes the best cappuccinos imaginable. You can find him online at: jasonware.com.

MAISON MARTIN MARGIELA 20TH ANNIVERSARY CATALOG

I am a great admirer of the work of Martin Margiela. Recently, I was at the Hammer Museum and came across this beautiful catalog celebrating the 20th Anniversary of the creation of his design house. The book is wonderfully illustrated and the essays explain in detail the many motifs that make up his design philosophy: Trompe l'oeil, Time & Body, Destruction, Paint, Incognito, History, etc. He is a designer with a very strong and singular vision. I find his approach to work very inspiring. — Gregory Ross

CALIFORNIA COMMUNITY FOUNDATION JULY NEWSLETTERS

Orabor Creative designs the quarterly newsletters for the California Community Foundation, a non-profit organization in Los Angeles. Last week we finished the design for the July issues and this past Tuesday we were on press with them at Typecraft, Inc.

Working with Jesus, our favorite pressman at Typecraft, John Schuning finalizes the color on one of the forms.

We recently spent the day at Jason Ware's photo studio working on an upcoming music project for Motown Records/Hip-O Select. The theme for this package is international travel and, along with Creative Directors Michele Horie and Vartan, we were able to conceptualize a number of set-ups that explore that concept.

Orabor Creative is pleased to announce the release of "FOREVER: The Complete Motown Albums, Volume I," a three-disc set compiling the first six albums by the Marvelettes. Working with our client Michele Horie at Hip-O Select/Motown Records, we created a package that was printed using a special foilkote process which gives the surface a shimmering, mirror-like effect. Our goal was to create a clean, modern piece that also paid tribute to design trends of the period.
